Training Overview Description

Did you know that some people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at higher risk for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRDs)? Many people with IDD are living longer, which increases the chances of experiencing age-related cognitive changes. Learn about typical aging vs. differences in people with IDD, and strategies and supports for aging well. The training will use interactive, interdisciplinary, case-based learning. Cases and discussion will include cultural considerations for working in rural Alaska and with Alaska Native communities.

Participants will be able to:
1. Identify 2 ways that having IDD may increase one’s vulnerability to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRDs).
2. Identify 2 lifestyle or environmental factors which may slow down or reduce the risk of being afflicted with an ADRD.
3. Apply culturally appropriate strategies for managing age related changes in interdisciplinary case studies.
